Battambang, Cambodia. These two friends were hanging out near a gas station when we stopped to refuel. They were very curious about us, as we were in an area with relatively few western tourists. We chatted a bit using sign language and our driver as translator. The boy in front was a bit more enthusiastic about having his picture made; his friend was a tad skeptical.

Otjiwarongo, Namibia. We had stopped at a gas station to refuel before venturing into a more rural area. This girl watched us intently from behind a chain link fence. I approached her and asked - in sign language - if I could make her portrait. She nodded her consent but didn't change expression or move the whole time. After making several frames, i showed her the images on my camera's LCD and then, finally, she broke into a beautiful smile.

Fruita, Colorado. Mutton-busting is the premiere kids event at small-town rodeos thoughout Colorado. It requires youngsters to ride a sheep bareback, holding on for dear life. The winner is the one who stays aboard and upright the longest. This competitor showed some trepedition at the starting gate but ultimately won the competition.
